In our life, we cannot escape from dealing with speaking and writing. Both of these skills are needed in order for us to communicate with others to express our opinions and needs. In communication, there are always at least two people involved. To communicate, one person must put something "out" and another person must take something "in". These processes consist two divisions, which is input and output. Speaking required mouth as an input to speak to others and ears as an output to listen. Meanwhile, writing involved hands as an input to write and eyes as an output to read. Some people say that speaking is easier than writing and some of them are saying vice versa. As for me, I prefer to say that speaking is easier compare to writing.
Speaking comes first before writing. We are exposed to speaking since we were born. Speaking is natural as we gain it from people around us. Speaking can be defined as human natural skill as it not needed to taught, it comes naturally within us. Writing not so natural to us. It has to be taught as it requires knowledge in grammar, spelling, structuring, punctuation and lots more. Writing is useless if nobody cannot understand our writing. While a listener can understand a speaker even if he does not know the speaker's language, a reader cannot understand anything if he are not able to read or does not know the language of a writer.
Furthermore, we use body language in speaking. It will help us to convey people to understand us. Sometimes, action speaks louder than words. In contrast, writing does not have this, it just use merely words as its weapon. So, with writing, we must be clear enough in order to make people understand and not misinterpret us.
Moreover, with speaking we can get instant feedback as we can easily notice if the listener understands our ideas or not or even get bored with our talking. Meanwhile, with writing we do not have any idea whether the readers can understand our point or not.
Writing is recorded and more permanent. So, we tend to write anything using a correct grammar and in a structured way. Somehow, in writing, we will automatically change our style of communication to be more formal. It is true, we can still be as friendly as we want in our writing but of course, the stress words and styles of sentence would be different. For example, we might write, "the car exploded" but say, "The car blew up".
On the other hand, when we speak, it is only requires the sound of sentences. We usually speak with less structured way and not depending on the grammar itself. We can use a variety of vocabulary and may include some slang and accent in the conversation. When we speak, we tend to use other aspects that are not present in writing, such as facial expression and tone of voice. This means that we can communicate at several levels, not only with words.
However, different people may have different ability. Some of them find that writing is easier than speaking because they do not have to deal with the audience to face their reactions which for sure will make the speakers nervous. Overall, it depends on that individual to decide but as for me, I can say that speaking is easier than writing.
